You Won’t Skip the Sunscreen After Reading These Facts
Here at Carroten, we believe in enjoying the outdoors and getting out into the sunshine. When the winter weather tries to keep you inside, it’s even more important to beat the blues and get out as much as you can.
That being said, winter is not the time to start slacking on the SPF front. While many people assume that cooler weather means less risk to their skin, it’s just as important to include sunscreen in your daily routine in the winter months as it is in the summer.
Here are 4 facts about the winter sun that will have you reaching for your sunscreen.
1. Cloud Cover Isn’t Skin Cover
As the clouds cover the sun, it’s tempting to skip the sunscreen. In fact, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate straight through the clouds and can cause damage to your skin. While the UVB rays associated with sunburn can be filtered out, UVA rays can penetrate glass and clouds to damage your skin.
UVA rays penetrate deeply into your skin, causing ageing and potentially increasing your risk of developing skin cancers. So even though you can’t feel the warmth of the sun on your skin and you probably won’t get a visible sunburn, the UVA rays can still be doing damage if your skin is not properly protected.
2. Winter Sports Need Sun Protection
The higher you go, the more damaging UV rays you will be exposed to – and of course, winter is generally regarded as the best time to hit the slopes. For every 1,000 feet above sea level the UV index climbs by 4-5%, meaning that the daily UV index for the general area likely isn’t reliable if you are heading up any hills. The reflection and glare off the snow and clouds can also create a higher risk factor.
Don’t let the snow and the cool weather fool you into feeling safe without sunscreen. More than ever, if you’re out participating in winter events you need to make sure you’re covered with a sunscreen that gives your skin the maximum protection.
3. Skipping the Sunscreen will Age You Faster
The damaging effects of the sun are well documented, and the winter sun is no different. One study showed that participants who used daily sunscreen aged at a rate that was 24% slower than those who didn’t – a significant increase in the rate of ageing for those who skip this important step.
Skipping the sunscreen could be ageing you faster – but the positive news is that it’s easy to slow down the process. Daily use of sunscreen throughout the year protects your skin from the photo-ageing effects of the sun, one of the most significant causes of premature ageing.
4. The Big “C”- You Can Help Protect Yourself
No one likes talking about cancer – it’s a scary reality that over 80% of cancer diagnosed in Australia are skin cancers, and the vast majority of skin cancers are caused by unprotected exposure to the sun.
We live in the lucky country, but unfortunately that doesn’t apply to our skin cancer rates – Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Melanomas are particularly common here, and they are the most dangerous form of skin cancer, especially if they go undetected.
Most skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation in sunlight, which means that our biggest weapon against skin cancer is to stay protected. Sun damage is cumulative, meaning it builds up over time – so ensuring that you use a sunscreen every day, year round, significantly reduces your chances of contributing to skin cancer statistics.
While there are risks associated with unprotected exposure to the sun, the good news is that it’s relatively simple to keep protected. We tend to cover up more in winter, which is helpful for keeping UV rays off your skin and providing an extra layer of protection. For the exposed areas of your skin, by far the best product you can incorporate into your beauty routine is a quality sunscreen – like any from Carroten’s wide range.
The Australian Cancer Council recommends a sunscreen that has at least SPF30+ and offers broad spectrum protection, and Carroten meets the requirements to a high standard.
